SIK/TENG: NEVERMIND BY NIRVANA

SIK/TENG is a supper club concept created by friends where food is inspired by music.

This is Episode 2: ‘Nevermind’ by NIRVANA.

Each SIK/TENG episode starts with a selected musical album, which inspires the designing of a bespoke menu and a creative direction for the storytelling of the dining experience through experimental film and photography.

The creative direction for Episode 2 was based on selecting Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind. We paired the album with a dark and moody visual style inspired by Dutch Golden Age still life paintings of the 17th century.

With Nirvana as our inspiration, the menu was designed to bring 90s gluttony to life through 3 courses of 1990s American steakhouse classics. The dishes were then shot against a Dutch Golden Age inspired art direction told in 3 scenes:

Scene 1: Illusion of Power
Scene 2: Fear of Not Enough
Scene 3: Temporality of Beauty

Each scene incorporates visual nods to the Dutch Masters’ style, using props that contrast the ephemerality of life (skulls, shells, decaying meats) with the vibrancy of life (bright flowers and rich-coloured fruits, crustaceans).

As this direction was quite unique from the first Phoenix episode, we wanted to create a visual cue that pointed to the differentiation of this story. Extending upon SIK/TENG’s original neon logo, for this episode we also created a unique logo that would fit the classic rock and roll vibe in black and white. This completed the episode’s art direction, and the logo was used to promote this episode on social media as well as being featured in this episode’s bespoke film.
